Scripture: 1 John 2:15
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Notes: Paul knew that the word would be so watered down through generation to generation and warned that false teachers would be cursed. What the word says is the only thing that counts. One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. We want to see what the word says and won’t accept anything less. So when it comes to the world we want to be separate. God warned us in His word what we would come up against. We should be ready to stand and give a reason for the hope that lies within us.(That’s partly why we need to attend Bible class, so that we can come together, be on the same page and speak the same thing. None of our homes run the same or have the same rules, so it’s doubly important for us to assemble together. Each church takes on the personality of the pastor.)
Who is our enemy?
God has spelled out and pinpointed the enemy in His word and admonished us to be sober. The devil is as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. The devil wants to destroy you, because He doesn’t want God to live in you. The devil’s purpose is to exalt himself above God. Ultimately, He is warring against the God in you. When you’re sober you’re aware, alert, strong and vigilant.
What is love?
God is love, but love is also affection that draws you in. When you love someone or something you want it in your company and you can’t live without it. That’s why the word instructs us to Love not the world. When you love something you become involved. It takes your attention and draws you in. The Bible also includes the “things” of this world.
What is the lust of the flesh?
Carnal desires that cater to our own pleasure. Each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death (James 1:14-15). The lust of the flesh nature is in opposition to to God and the enemy uses this to entice us to sin. Galatians 5 gives us a breakdown of the works of the flesh. The Bible says to shun these things that would cause you to fall. Beware the wiles of the devil. One little foothold can get you and affect your eternal hope.
What is the lust of the eyes?
See above. This would include what you see or want to see that makes you develop an urging that is counter to God’s word.
What is the pride of life?
This is exalting yourself above others and God. If you put yourself on a pedestal, God can bring you down. Don’t be bragging or boastful. Give God the glory. If it had not been for the Lord you would not have abilities. Pride goes before destruction; Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God and He will exalt you in due time.
The word of God is a keeper and it will keep you. Let’s get excited about God and His word.
