What’s wrong with Christians celebrating Halloween?

Is Halloween harmless fun or a practice of the occult? Ultimately, you’ll have to decide for yourself. However, if you’re unsure about your convictions, it’s best to directly pray and seek the Lord on this subject, or consult your pastor. In the meantime, here’s some info on the day itself.

History

Halloween can be traced back to the ancient festival of Samhain, where pagan priests would offer up human and animal sacrifices. They would travel house to house to collect money and offerings for the sacrifices. A lit pumpkin was used as a signal to mark the homes that supported these practices. Halloween is still celebrated in this way by those who practice witchcraft and the Satanic.

What does the Bible teach?

The Bible is clear the Christians should not practice, encourage or advance sorcery, witchcraft, or the occult. Here are some scriptures that can attest to that:

Ephesians 5: 7-12

Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

Deut. 18:  10-12

There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

Romans 12: 9

Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

1 Cor. 10: 21

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

2 Cor. 6: 14-17

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

1 Timothy 4: 1-2

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.

3 John 1: 11

Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

Tips

–Halloween does bring the world to your doorstep. If you’re intent on distributing something sweet, why not consider passing out tracts instead.

–Many create alternatives for this holiday, but maybe make it more of a teachable moment to celebrate and share the truth, way and life of Jesus Christ.
